Extension 12 April for OSM

Details
Published: Thursday, 02 April 2020 08:48

osm 21 logo webBecause of the current disruptions due to coronavirus, the deadline has been extended to 12 April 2020 for session proposals for PAGES' 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) to take place from 18-22 May 2021 in Agadir, Morocco.

The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) invites you to take an active part in organizing the scientific program of the conference. The OSM program will be comprised of plenary, parallel and poster sessions.

The SPC thanks all those who have submitted a session proposal already. More than 30 sessions have been received, and the extension is for those who were unable to meet the deadline.

The plenary sessions will host keynote talks intended to stimulate discussions on the role of past global change science by providing information about strategies for a sustainable world, on the engagement of stakeholders in active cutting-edge research, and on the added value of interdisciplinary approaches. The parallel and associated poster sessions will accommodate top-level ongoing research.

EcoRe3 Neotropics paper

Details
Published: Wednesday, 01 April 2020 18:02

WGLogoEcoRe3A new paper from PAGES' EcoRe3 working group uses 30 long-term, high-resolution palaeoecological records from Mexico, Central and South America to address two hypotheses regarding possible drivers of resilience in tropical forests as measured in terms of recovery rates from previous disturbances.

To test these hypotheses, authors, led by Carole Adolf, applied a threshold approach to identify past disturbances to forests within each sequence. They then compared the recovery rates to these events with pollen richness before the event.

The authors also compared recovery rates of each site with a measure of present resilience in the region as demonstrated by measuring global vegetation persistence to climatic perturbations using satellite imagery.

Access the Biology Letters paper "Identifying drivers of forest resilience in long-term records from the Neotropics" here.

The paper is also a contribution to the Biology Letters special feature 'Ecological resilience: from theory to empirical observations using long-term datasets' organized by EcoRe3. Access all the special feature papers here.

IPCC AR6 and COVID-19

ipccSurvey deadline 3 April

The IPCC Working Group I (WGI) Technical Support Unit (TSU) would like to solicit the research community's views regarding how the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is impacting the international research and how the community will be able to contribute to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Cycle (AR6).

The deadline for papers to be accepted for publication that can be cited in the Final Draft of the WGI Report is 30 September 2020.

The WGI TSU, and the IPCC more broadly, is investigating whether the COVID-19 outbreak could have any negative impacts on the IPCC AR6.

The WGI TSU would be grateful if you could spare five minutes to complete the following survey by 3 April.

Click 'Read more' for helpful information on how to review the paleo content in the AR6 Second-Order Draft. Register by 19 April.

Climate variability paper

Details
Published: Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:59

WGLogoCVASwithTitleClimate variables are related over long times and large distances. This shows up as correlations for averages on long intervals or between distant areas. An important finding is that the majority of correlations in climate can be described by a simple mathematical relationship.

Authors, led by Christian Franzke, present such correlations for temperature on long times in their recent paper "The Structure of Climate Variability Across Scales", now available in Reviews of Geophysics.

Find out more about the CVAS working group, which is now in its second phase, and how you can be involved, here.

GPWG2 fire policy issue brief

Details
Published: Wednesday, 11 March 2020 14:24

WGLOGOGlobalPaleofirePAGES' parent organization Future Earth has published an article about the recent Global Paleofire Working Group 2 Policy Brief.

While the area burnt by wildfires has declined globally over the past decades, fire is now occurring more frequently and severely in ecosystems that have historically rarely experienced fire. This issue brief examines the cause and sustainability implications of global fires. Access the Future Earth article here.
