In 2017, the PAGES2k consortium published a comprehensive collection of temperature sensitive proxy records covering the Common Era.
This collaborative group effort uses this PAGES 2k temperature database to produce reconstructions of global gridded surface temperature over the past 2000 years.
We aim to produce a dataset of spatially explicit (5°x5° spatial resolution) temperatures covering the Common Era to be used for multiple purposes, such as data-model comparison, detection and attribution, and the analysis of modes and mechanisms that operate in the climate system.
We use six different climate field reconstruction (CFR) methods and consistent input data and reconstruction parameters, to obtain comparable reconstructions. Reconstruction ensembles allow to analyze the spatio-temporal consistency of temperature anomalies, trends and variability and quantify the associated uncertainties.
The multi-method approach also helps to identify robust features of pre-industrial temperature variability that are not biased by an individual reconstruction method. It allows us to assess how the results of the various methods agree and disagree (such as low-frequency amplitudes vs. decadal-scale fluctuations, timing of extremes, spectral slopes, spatio-temporal distribution of skill and uncertainties).
The project started in late 2015 with an open call to all members of the PAGES2k consortium. It is now in an advanced state and is foreseen to be concluded in mid to late 2018.
