EarthCube seeking volunteers

logo earthcube cube-125x125The EarthCube initiative is now transitioning into a new and important phase that will require active input from geoscience researchers.

Volunteers are sought to serve on a number of committees and teams from October 2014 to September 2015.

The US NSF-sponsored EarthCube, is a long-term effort to create a community-driven data and knowledge management system that will allow for unprecedented data sharing across the geosciences.

To progress the next important phase, EarthCube is seeking volunteers to serve on a number of committees and teams from October 2014 to September 2015 - "the demonstration governance period".

Volunteers are sought for the:

*   Science Standing Committee

*   Technology/Architecture Standing Committee

*   Engagement Team

*   Liaison Team

Each committee and team will be responsible for carrying out specific critical functions for EarthCube and EarthCube governance. During the demonstration governance period, members will decide on the functions, decision-making processes and leadership roles of their committees.

Academic researchers are particularly needed to be part of the Science Standing Committee and take an active role in the design and direction of EarthCube, and help ensure the technology developed will meet the research data needs of users.


Who can apply?

All end-user geoscientists are welcome to apply from across the geoscience spectrum - atmospheric, polar, ocean, solid earth, and earth systems. Polar researchers are particularly sought for the Science Committee.

US and non-US scientists are welcome to apply. Participation will be completely virtual and volunteer-based. (Non-US scientists note: In the event travel costs do occur, EarthCube is unable to cover these costs as it is supported solely by the US-NSF.)


Application deadlines

No set deadline, members are welcome to join at any time.


Meeting Schedule

The first virtual meetings are scheduled to begin from the 2nd of Sept 2014. During these meetings the committees and teams will create a process to elect their representative to the Leadership Council and begin talks around the priority issues they will tackle in the coming year. While it is optimal people attend this first meeting, it is not mandatory and members can inform themselves of the meeting outcomes via
 
1) Meeting minutes, action items, and any outcomes, which will be emailed to members shortly after the meeting.
2) YouTube video recording of the meeting.
3) Online resources that were created to carry out the work discussed on the call.
