Postdoc, ocean modeling - Bern, Switzerland

The Climate and Environmental Physics Division of the University of Bern, Switzerland, has a vacancy for a two-year postdoctoral position in ocean modeling with a focus on ocean compound extreme events.

Logistics

Consideration of applications begins immediately. The position will stay open until filled. The salary is according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation and University of Bern. The term of appointment is for two years.

Description

The Ocean Modelling group of the Climate and Environmental Physics Division at the University of Bern is seeking applications for a postdoc position in the area of modeling marine ecosystem-carbon cycle-climate interactions.

The research project will focus on quantifying and understanding past and future changes in ocean compound extreme events. Compound events are extremes in different hazards, such as warming, acidification, deoxygenation, and nutrient stress, occurring simultaneously or in close spatial/temporal sequence. The simultaneous occurrence of two or more extreme events can lead to especially severe impacts on marine organisms and ecosystem services.

The Postdoc project offers the opportunity to work with a comprehensive climate-carbon cycle Earth System model, large ensemble simulations, and with novel satellite-based, in-situ physical and biogeochemical ocean observations. The candidate will present results at international scientific meetings and publish in peer-reviewed literature. The candidate is also encouraged to work on related topics and to develop her/his own projects.

The researcher will profit from being an active part of the dynamical ocean modeling group. The research will be embedded within the collaborative project OceanX funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which aims at discovering and attributing past and future changes in ocean extremes, and at assessing and mapping the risks of extreme events for marine organisms and ecosystems.

The research is closely linked to the activities of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research of the University of Bern and of two recently funded European projects (COMFORT and AtlantECO).

Requirements

An outstanding postdoctoral researcher is sought, with a PhD in oceanography, Earth sciences, physics, mathematics, or related fields. Candidates with a strong background in climate modeling, the analysis of large datasets and in extreme value analysis are preferred. The position requires the ability and interest to work across disciplines, and the proven ability to work independently.

Applications

Applications should include a CV, a publication list, a statement of research interests (max. two pages), a web link to the PhD thesis (if already defended), and the names and addresses of three references, and should be submitted as a single pdf file to Prof. Dr. Thomas Frölicher: This email address is being protected from spambots.
