LOTRED-SA-symposiumPart of the LOTRED SA 3rd Symposium: Climate change and human impact in Central and South America over the last 2000 years, the pre-congress training course for young scientists is an intensive two-day course designed for students and young scientists undertaking proxy- based and modeling-based research in palaeoecology and paleoclimate in South and Central America.

It aims at providing specific training on theoretic and practical tools used on the integration of archives, proxies and sites in order to reconstruct past
climates and environments. It will provide training in the spatial
interpretation of paleodata focusing on the challenges and opportunities
in multi-proxy analysis over time.

Various software packages will be used, such as the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, the popular open-source software of R for statistical analysis and Quantum GIS for spatial analysis.

The course will be taught in Spanish and will consist of four modules of lectures, discussions and hands-on computer work with actual paleoecological data. The first day is open to all users with different backgrounds and experiences, who would like to learn about the spatial and temporal methods currently applied to paleoecological databases around the world. The second day will go further into multi-proxy analysis and the state of art on paleo-mapping techniques. We will ask the participants to prepare for
the workshop by reading a selected number of key articles and bring
their data which will be discussed with the workshop organizers at
forehand.

This course provides a unique opportunity for Latin American
students and researchers to meet and discuss, and to enhance contacts,
exchanging perspectives and increasing interaction among the regional
scientific community and with colleagues from overseas.
