Nominate for PAGES' SSC

Details
Published: Thursday, 04 March 2021 18:05

icon applyssc s PAGES is calling for applications from scientists to serve on its Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) from January 2022.

The deadline for consideration is Friday 2 April.

The SSC is the body responsible for overseeing PAGES' activities. New members are sought to fill the places of outgoing members (see the SSC member history list).

Scientists who serve on the SSC normally do so for a period of three years, with the potential of renewing for an additional three-year term. Read more for details on what's involved in being an SSC member and how to apply.

SISAL database update

Details
Published: Tuesday, 02 March 2021 16:14

WGLogoSISALMembers of the PAGES Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL) working group have published a "Science Update" in Eos on the power of paleoclimate databases as tools for improving climate models.

"Improving access to paleoclimate data", by Nikita Kaushal et al., also explains how SISAL has reached out beyond the speleothem community and established collaborations with researchers from other paleoclimate disciplines.

The paper gives a detailed history of SISAL and the development of its database.

Carbon isotope constraints

Details
Published: Monday, 01 March 2021 17:30

img fig oc3 feb 21 webMembers of PAGES' former working group Ocean Circulation and Carbon Cycling (OC3) have published a new paper on carbon isotope model data comparison in Quaternary Science Reviews.

Juan Muglia and Andreas Schmittner present a detailed analysis of the skill of carbon isotopes to constrain past ocean circulation configurations in their paper "Carbon isotope constraints on glacial Atlantic meridional overturning: Strength vs depth".

The duo find that global compilations of carbon isotope reconstructions are able to constrain the depth of the glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in ocean models. However, circulation rates can only be constrained when comparing model results with reconstructions at locations where there exist isotope data of high vertical resolution. The number of such sites is very limited, evidencing the need for models to include other possible tracers of past circulation rates.

Missing ice and the LGM

Details
Published: Thursday, 25 February 2021 15:34

img fig palsea nat comms feb 21 webScientists involved with PAGES' PALSEA working group may have discovered the cause of "missing ice" during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).

In the recent Nature Communications paper "A new global ice sheet reconstruction for the past 80 000 years", authors, led by Evan Gowan, present a global ice-sheet reconstruction, called PaleoMIST 1.0, created independently of far-field sea-level and δ18O proxy records.

CRIAS climate history exhibition

Details
Published: Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:01

img crias exhibit metzger webPAGES' Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS) working group proudly presents a new online art exhibition focusing on climate history.

Contemporary and historical climate change is beyond the scale of human perception. Meteorological extremes, such as droughts and floods, have generally left only indirect evidence in the material heritage of past societies. But scholars can combine instrumental data, proxy information, and written sources to reconstruct these patterns.

PAGES survey - last days!

Details
Published: Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:18

icon surveyHave your say by 14 February!

PAGES has prepared a survey (Google doc) to collect suggestions from the paleoscience community regarding PAGES' activities in the coming years.

It consists of three sections – About you, PAGES' priorities, and what PAGES can do for you – and should take about 10 minutes to complete.

The survey is anonymous, and the results will be presented in the upcoming 30th anniversary issue of Past Global Changes Magazine.

We look forward to receiving your feedback and thank you in advance for taking the survey.
